Our diet plays a significant role in our life. Proper diet leads to sound health of an individual. Sound health not just means healthy body but the healthy mind and healthy soul as well. Since our body is made of up elements that are present in nature, nature has a direct effect on us. The food we take which is the product of nature is one of the many that has a major impact on our body. As per Ayurveda, food can be classified into 2 types on the basis of their internal nature: hot food and cold food.
Now, hot food has a heating effect in our body whereas cold food gives a soothing and cooling effect to our body which in turn has a huge impact on our metabolism and digestion. During summer, people are prone to dehydration, skin sensitivities, vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Seasonal fruits such as bananas, strawberries, watermelons, kiwis, asparagus, lettuce, brinjal, mushroom not only will keep one cool and hydrated but helps clear the toxins in our body and provide the essential vitamin and mineral that the body lacks.
During winter, in order to keep the body warm fruits like apples, oranges, root veggies like carrot, turnips, spinach, broccoli etc can be included in our diet as they fall into hot category thus giving a heating effect to our body. But if the intake of this diet is reversed or if one consumes an excess of hot food during summers or a lot of cold food during winters then this will lead to an imbalance in our doshas which in turn will affect our health.
Thus, eating the right food at the right time is a way to a healthy life. Also, we need to keep in mind to include seasonal fruits and vegetables in our diet as they retain not just better nutrients and minerals but also better flavor than their counterparts.
